You know we dread having to say those words…”My toilet is stuffed and is overflowing!” At JPI Plumbing & Heating, Inc. we would like to help you so you know what to do when the issue arises.

First, Don’t Panic. I know it is easier said then done, but panicking will not help the situation. In fact it will probably make it worse as you will start to rush and do things you probably should not do that will only cause more of a mess as well as damage.

With a little practice and most importantly with a little patience you may be able to get the job done in minutes!

First, clean up any water that may have spilled on the floor. Give the water level about 10 minutes or so to go down, then you can start dealing with the problem using a toilet plunger to begin unclogging a toilet.

You need to know that almost all clogged toilets are what we call ‘slow drainers’. This means that the flush water partially fills the bowl but doesn’t rush out and clean away the waste. The water level remains high, then usually drains down to normal height within a minute or two. You probably will not know the toilet is even clogged until you try to flush it.

Now grab your plunger. If you do not have a plunger go get one now – BEFORE you have a clogged drain or toilet. A toilet plunger with an extension flange is designed to fit toilets better, so you can deliver more effort to the plunge. The toilet plunger will unplug sink and tub drains, too, if you simply fold the flange back into the bell. So spend a few extra dollars and get the one with extension flange.

The next step in how to unclog a toilet with a plunger is to plunge the toilet with the rubber flange pulled out to get a better seal. Push the plunger in and out vigorously, keeping enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger. Keep towels handy to wipe up water that splashes out – and it probably will.

Most of the time, this is all it takes to clear the clog. But for tougher clogs, you will probably need a plumber. You could go through all of the work and try to remove the bowl from the floor. It will be messy and you will need a new wax ring and parts. Then you have to snake it. But if the clog may be further along down the pipeline, your snake will not reach it and do the job anyway.
